What Is a Chiropractor?
A Chiropractor is a regulated health profession in Canada who focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions related to the spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system. Chiropractors are extensively trained in anatomy, biomechanics, neurology, and rehabilitation, allowing them to provide safe and effective manual therapy to people of all ages.
Chiropractors don’t just treat the spine, they assess and treat the entire musculoskeletal system. This means they can help with everything from headaches and neck pain to ankle sprains and shoulder injuries.
Chiropractic treatment often combines several techniques, such as manual adjustments, joint mobilizations, soft tissue therapy, therapeutic exercise, and patient education.
The goal of Chiropractic Treatment is to restore proper joint movement, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve how your body moves and functions overall.
Conditions that Chiropractic Care can help with….
Chiropractors can assess and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
Spine & Back
Lower back pain and stiffness
Sciatica or nerve irritation
Scoliosis or posture-related issues
Neck & Head
Neck pain or reduced neck mobility
Tension headaches and migraines
Whiplash or postural strain
Extremities & Joints
Shoulder impingement or rotator cuff injuries
Tennis or golfer’s elbow
Hip, knee, and ankle pain
Sprains, strains, and repetitive use injuries
Other Functional Issues
TMJ (jaw) dysfunction
Pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain
Postural imbalances
Sports performance optimization
Many clients also seek chiropractic care for preventative maintenance, helping them move freely, manage stress on their bodies, and prevent future injuries.
What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) or high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) adjustment, is one of the most well-known techniques used by chiropractors.
During an adjustment, your chiropractor applies a quick, controlled and precise force to a specific joint that isn’t moving properly.
The goal of Chiropractic Adjustments is to help:
Improve joint range of motion
Reduce muscle tightness and irritation
Decrease nerve irritation
Promote better movement and alignment
You may hear a “click” or “pop” during the adjustment. This is simply gas being released from the joint (similar to cracking your knuckles). It’s painless and completely normal. The benefit of the adjustment comes from the improved motion and neurological response it creates, not from the sound itself.
For patients who prefer gentler techniques or for certain conditions, your chiropractor may use low-force methods such as:
Activator or instrument-assisted adjustments
Mobilizations (slow, controlled joint movements)
Soft tissue or muscle release methods
Your chiropractor will always discuss options and tailor the treatment to your comfort level and health needs.
What are other treatment techniques Chiropractors use to help you recover?
Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy (or extracorporeal shockwave therapy) uses high-pressure sound waves to break down scar tissue, promote healing, and relieve chronic pain.
Originally developed to treat kidney stones, this technology is now widely used for musculoskeletal injuries. Each session may cause mild discomfort and produces a distinct tapping sound — a normal part of the process.
Common Uses:
Plantar fasciitis
Shin splints
Shoulder impingement
Trigger finger
Achilles tendinosis
Golfer’s or tennis elbow
Chronic muscle pain

Soft Tissue Therapy
Soft tissue therapy is a form of manual massage used to reduce pain, improve blood flow, and speed recovery. Chiropractors may use their hands or tools like vibration devices (e.g., Theragun) to apply different massage techniques including effleurage, petrissage, and cross-friction massage.
Benefits:
Increases circulation and lymphatic drainage
Reduces muscle tension and spasms
Promotes relaxation and healing
Commonly used for: muscle adhesions, trigger points, bronchial congestion, and lymphatic impairments.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping uses gentle suction to lift the skin and tissues, improving blood flow, promoting lymphatic drainage, and reducing muscle tightness and adhesions.
IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization)
IASTM uses specialized tools to glide over the skin and stimulate healing in soft tissues. It helps break down scar tissue, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve range of motion.
These techniques are often combined with chiropractic adjustments for faster recovery and lasting results.
Exercise Rehab
Exercise rehabilitation is an essential component of effective Chiropractic Care. Research consistently shows that exercise is the most effective non-invasive intervention for managing and resolving musculoskeletal pain.
While manual therapies and adjustments can significantly improve mobility and relieve discomfort, targeted exercise ensures lasting improvement by rebuilding strength, stability, and resilience.
A customized exercise plan designed by your Chiropractor supports optimal healing and helps prevent future injuries, ensuring you return to full activity safely and confidently.
